Polyurethane deck skirt to stop water trails behind scrubbers

Polyurethane deck skirt to stop water trails behind scrubbers
Customer type
A hospital facilities team scrubbing vinyl and sealed concrete floors daily, using disinfectant-heavy wash water.
Customization demand
Floors were left visibly wet behind the scrubbers, creating a slip risk that had to be managed with extra passes and warning signs. The rubber skirts looked intact but had hardened, so they no longer followed the floor contour. Standard replacement rubber lasted only a few months in the chemical environment.

Solution

1

Material change

Specified polyurethane rather than standard rubber. Polyurethane keeps its flexibility in contact with the disinfectants used in healthcare wash water, where nitrile and natural rubber harden and take a set.

2

Segmented replacement

The decks use segmented skirts, so only the damaged sections were replaced. This cut the cost per intervention and meant the team could carry spares without stocking complete strips.

3

Seal check procedure

Added a two-minute skirt check to the daily pre-use walkaround: run a hand along the skirt and confirm it still touches the floor across the full width. Hardening is gradual, so relying on visual inspection alone is what let the problem build up unnoticed.
